If you haven’t visited the Black Hills of South Dakota, here’s your chance! The promoter of the Dakota 5-o has kicked off a new winter race and it’s set for March 22. The Savoy Winter Challenge – 28 Below is a full winter event, including a 28-mile fatbike race, along with a 6-mile snowshoe/ski race.
After record snowfall this winter that started in September, the base has been laid for a long, great fatbike season. The mountain biking in the Black Hills is an up and coming gem. With initiatives around the area to build and promote riding, the word will likely get out quickly that the region has a lot to offer.
What can you expect from the 28 Below Fatbike Race? A 28-mile route of some great fatbiking. You are primarily on your own. They will have signage at key points and some course marking, along with a map for all riders to carry. Riders/runners will need to carry all of their own food and water. On the 28 Below (28 mile) course there will be a halfway point at a fire lookout where we will have an “aid station” with water, and possibly some other drink and snack food items. The ski/snowshoe (6 mile)course will have no aid stations.
After the race, riders will be welcomed with FREE food, music, and drinks for all participants following the event. Awards ceremony at 3pm at the Lodge. Cash Prize(TBD) for top male & female overall winner in both events! Plus, each participant registered before March 1 gets a custom T-shirt.
It’s the final race of the 6-race Mountain Fatbike Series. The Mountain Fatbike Series is a point series made up of a collection of fatbike races throughout the western mountain region. Racers will compete for overall series placings and prizes. The first race in the series, the 3rd Annual Grand Targhee Fat Bike Race, is set to kick off on January 18.
